In Israel

I feel totally homesick. I don't know what I was thinking coming here. I miss Chris so much. I wish I had a job and was making something instead of burning through my savings. I am so wary of signing a lease after the insident in Binghamton and since I don't know how long I can actually stomach staying. I think I have pretty solidly decided I liked where I was with Judiasm and practice. As for my goal of learning a foriegn langauge I should have bought the rosetta stone for Russian. A) I am not going to really learn Hebrew B) even if I did its not a very useful language.

I hope things get better when classes start. I think school will be fun and interesting... but I am not sure its the best use of my time.

Today I totaled my car.

Today I totaled my car. Everyone says its just metal and that I should just be happy that I am alive. I am not though. That car was my ticket to freedom. That was how I was going to move and find a job when I return next May. Now I feel trapped and stuck forever. I loved that car. It was my first. I wish this morning never happened.

Latest job ideas

1) admissions work for a university -- my friend Gabe said he could help me get a job in that field. With that job I could think about what graduate programs are available and what jobs are out there. There would be tons of travel and meeting people too. Working for a university would also allow me to not live in a big city.

2) still considering working for Hillel. Going to Pardes should qualify me for a full time job.

3) I might pack up and move to Washington DC. I have a lot of friends there and the city isn't too big. There is also a good size Jewish community. I could take some of my savings and give myself two months to find a job. This is what my brother recommends doing. Perhaps I will apply to work at the USITC since I interned there for the summer. I also would mind working in politics or not-for-profits. I really love event organizing.

I have a feeling that going to Israel for a year will change me so that I won't feel comfortable working on Shabbos. This means no jobs like my dream job at Magic Hat that I posted about previously.

Facebook relationship status... the fools rush in

So as some of you may have noticed a few weeks ago Chris and I took our relationship off Facebook. Within days I was getting messages from guys who previously had crushes on me but who "disappeared" when the "in a relationship" status went up. In the last three days, two of my guy friends tried to kiss me. Both were stunned when I dodged and said I wasn't interested. Both followed this up by stating that the situation was now awkward. Honestly, I think there statement that it was awkward made it more unconfort than if they had just played it off. I have also recieved drunken calls with male emotional content... It has been a strange few weeks!

I also thought it was funny that none of the above referenced guys cared to take the time to ask about my relationship status. I would have told that Chris and I are still together its just strange because we have an end date. We decided to remove the title since I am leaving for Israel soon. I WILL NOT REALLY BE SINGLE UNTIL I LEAVE FOR ISRAEL.

Attending my first "real" bacholorette party

I am really excited about my friend Lila's upcoming bacholorette party. Lila is one of the few people I predict I will stay in touch with over the years that I met in college. We met on the Hillel girls basket ball team. She was one of the worst players, which was amuzing since she was the only black girl. I was also not very good.

These are the places we are going for her big night out:

http://www.planetluckychengs.com/bachlorettes.html
http://www.crimescenebar.com/

Howard Dean didn’t scream. Hillary Clinton didn’t say she was staying in the race because Barack Obama might be assassinated. And Wesley Clark didn’t impugn John McCain’s military service.

Scott McClellan, the former White House press secretary, titled his tell-all memoir “What Happened.” But a true account of modern American politics should be titled “What Didn’t Happen.” Again and again we’ve had media firestorms over supposedly revealing incidents that never actually took place.

The latest fake scandal fit the usual pattern as an awkwardly phrased remark, lifted out of context and willfully misinterpreted, exploded across the airwaves.

What General Clark actually said was that Mr. McCain’s war service, though heroic, didn’t necessarily constitute a qualification for the presidency. It was a blunt but truthful remark, and not at all outrageous — especially given the fact that General Clark is himself a bona fide war hero.

Yet the Clark affair did reveal something important — not about General Clark, but about Mr. McCain. Now we know what a McCain administration would represent: namely, a third term for Karl Rove.

It was predictable that the McCain campaign would go wild over the Clark remarks. Mr. McCain’s run for the White House has always been based on persona rather than policy: he doesn’t have ideas that voters agree with, but he does have an inspiring life story — which, contrary to the myth of the modest maverick, he talks about all the time. The suggestion that this life story isn’t relevant to his quest for office was bound to provoke a violent reaction.

But the McCain campaign went beyond condemning General Clark’s remarks; it went out of its way to distort them. “This backhanded slap against John as not being a worthy warrior because he just got shot down is one of the more surprising insults in my military history,” said retired Col. Bud Day, who participated in a conference call organized by the campaign. In fact, General Clark had said no such thing.

The irony, not lost on Democrats, is that Col. Day himself has done what he falsely accused Wesley Clark of doing: he appeared in the 2004 Swift boat ads that impugned John Kerry’s wartime service.

The willingness of the McCain campaign to engage in these tactics, employing such tainted spokesmen, tells us that the campaign has decided to go negative — specifically, to apply the strategy Karl Rove used so effectively in 2002 and 2004 (but not so effectively in 2006), that of portraying Democrats as unpatriotic.

And sure enough, Adam Nagourney of The New York Times reports signs of the “increasing influence of veterans of Mr. Rove’s shop in the McCain operation.”

Will Rovian tactics work this year?

In 2002 and 2004, Republicans were so successful at playing the patriotism card thanks to a combination of compliant media and cowering Democrats. At first, the Clark affair suggested that nothing has changed. News organizations reported as fact the false assertion that General Clark criticized Mr. McCain’s military service, and the Obama campaign rushed to “reject” his remarks.

“Two days into the Wesley Clark fallout,” wrote the Columbia Journalism Review on Tuesday morning, “the press, the G.O.P., and the Obama campaign all seem to have agreed that Clark’s recent remarks on John McCain’s service record were at best impolitic and at worst despicable.”

Since then, however, both the press and the Obama campaign seem to have recovered some of their balance. Opinion pieces have started to appear pointing out that General Clark didn’t say what he’s accused of saying. Mr. Obama has also declared that General Clark doesn’t owe Mr. McCain an apology for his “inartful” remarks and denies that his own condemnation, in a speech given on Monday, of those who “devalue” military service was aimed at the general.

In the end, the Clark affair may have strengthened the Obama campaign. Last week, with his cave-in on wiretapping, Mr. Obama was showing disturbing signs of falling into the usual Democratic cringe on national security. This may have been the week he rediscovered the virtues of standing tall.

Furthermore, my sense, though it’s hard to prove, is that the press is feeling a bit ashamed about the way it piled on General Clark. If so, news organizations may think twice before buying into the next fake scandal.

If so, the campaign has just taken a major turn in Mr. Obama’s favor. After all, if this campaign isn’t dominated by faux outrage over fake scandals, it will have to be about things that really did happen, like a failed economic policy and a disastrous war — both of which Mr. McCain promises will continue if he wins.
 <nyt_author_id>

David Brooks is off today.

</nyt_author_id>

Our mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity that exists along socioeconomic lines.

Since our founding in 1990, we have become the nation’s largest provider of teachers for low-income communities, and have been recognized for building a pipeline of leaders committed to educational equity and excellence. This year, approximately 5,000 corps members are teaching in 26 urban and rural areas across the country, collectively reaching approximately 440,000 students. At the same time, more than 12,000 alumni are working within education and from every field to effect fundamental change.

We are a high-growth, performance-driven organization, with over a $100+ million budget and 800+ staff. We operate in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced work environment, maintain focus on quantitative measures, and are committed to continuous improvement. While approximately 55 percent of our staff members are alumni of our program, fully half – from support staff to senior management – bring a range of outside experience and perspectives to the organization. Our staff is diverse in every respect, and we are committed to maximizing the diversity of our organization as we want to engage all those who can contribute to our effort and ensure our access to and participation in the circles of influence in our diverse society.

Fueled by a sense of urgency to do more, we have launched an ambitious plan to grow in scale while at the same time increasing our corps members’ short-term and long-term impact. By 2010, we aim to have some 7,500 corps members teaching in 33 regions and to foster the continued leadership of some 23,000 alumni. To support these goals we are working to grow our operating budget to over $150 million and the size of our staff to over 1,000.

Summary

The recruitment team at Teach For America is responsible for enlisting this country’s most promising future leaders to join our movement to eliminate educational inequity. Recruitment associates play an essential role in this team’s success, and comprise over one-third of its 200 members. Each recruitment associate reports directly to a recruitment director and together they work to develop and execute strategies to achieve ambitious goals for recruiting a diverse group of corps members across a portfolio of colleges and universities.

Within their portfolio, recruitment associates also take on primary ownership of the recruitment campaigns at one or more “emerging” campuses, schools where Teach For America has historically had a limited presence. The recruitment associate is responsible for developing the strategy, creating a marketing plan, and leveraging resources to execute a successful campaign.

In July, recruitment associates participate in training to learn the key skills they will need for their role. From August through February, recruitment associates are focused primarily on individual outreach to top potential candidates. Beginning in October, recruitment associates will also develop and execute campaign strategies aimed at emerging campuses. After the final application deadline in February, recruitment associates will divide their time between a number of priorities focused on launching spring campaigns, helping in the hiring of on-campus student representatives, and preparing for the coming recruitment season by building a starter kit based on the previous recruitment campaign’s experience. Throughout the year recruitment associates are expected to complete projects within short-term deadlines.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Compelling top prospective applicants to meet with a recruitment director or campus visitor by writing personalized e-mails that are tailored to each individual (Recruitment associates devote the majority of their efforts to this component of their work.)
• Sourcing prospective applicants and faculty/staff contacts by conducting internet research and using resources on campus to identify top prospects for the corps
•	Planning full days of events and individual prospect meetings for a recruitment director and campus visitors
•	Conducting data analysis and using tracking systems to determine effectiveness of campaign strategy and execution
•	Communicating effectively with current corps members and alumni to involve them in recruitment campaigns
•	Managing the recruitment campaign from beginning-to-end at one or more emerging campuses
•	Helping to manage a team of campus-based student representatives who work on behalf of Teach For America
• Organizing and providing logistical coordination for recruitment events, information sessions, career fairs, and the visits of alumni and recruitment directors to campus
• Executing marketing strategies including, but not limited to: selecting appropriate school-specific marketing materials from existing templates or modifying materials to fit your campaign; distributing materials; placing advertisements; generating campus press coverage
• Providing administrative support including, but not limited to: conducting relevant research; tracking all aspects of campaign progress; maintaining databases; owning the recruitment director’s calendar; coordinating travel

Education and Experience

•	Bachelor’s degree required
•	0 to 4 years of experience
•	Experience working with organizational systems (e.g. Excel, databases) preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•	Commitment to reaching ambitious team goals
•	Strong work ethic with a desire to go above and beyond standard expectations
•	Extremely strong organizational skills including detail-orientation
•	Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
•	Ability to contribute as part of a two-person team
•	Strong written and oral communication skills
•	Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
•	Comfort working with databases and analyzing data

Will I ever find a job???

First off... I am PMSing... now add that to going off my meds and being under employed.

Thankfully I think I may have met the love of my life.

So I have been brain storming jobs I think I could be happy with... although ... I don't qualify for any of them...

Hillel jobs that I am interested in:

The Director of Engagement is responsible for Hillel at Binghamton’s most important priority – reaching out to students who do not easily affiliate with Jewish life at Binghamton University.

The Jewish Community Organizer is responsible for creating communities of Jewish student life Binghamton University.

Science related job I am interested in:

Company: Museum of Science
Job Title: Teacher Educator - Secondary Level
Description: Teacher Educator - Secondary Level

I was also thinking I could be a health teacher.

Great Confusion - hope I am just overtired

I just got off the phone with Russ. I don't know whether my discussion with him was true for me in general or if it was true to me only as I spoke.

After talking with Russ for a while I asked him what he did last weekend. He said he hung out with friends. I jokingly responded "you have friends?" After I said it though, it wasn't a joke anymore. I was throughly stumped trying to picture him with friends other than those I have meet. I have met most of Nat's friends and have observed that she has only a few intense relationships and I can generally picture her with any of her friends. I believe Russ was most likely offended that I couldn't picture him hanging out with other people. He has a larger range of friends, meaning he interacts with more levels of friends. By the end of it I was so baffled at my inability to imagine other peoples lives when I am not there. As Russ put it I think of my life as a RPG where I am in control of my character and I ponder everything in relationship to me. This has its pro's. I forgive very well perhaps on the basis that it is all just a test or challenge. Do I believe in other peoples free will? Perhaps this is why I have trouble understanding why things offend other people and why I leave gaps in my papers.

Stuck in pre peek-a-boo phase.

Perhaps I none of this will make sense in the morning.

why'd they hafta

Why'd they hafta go and taint pi day? I just found out that steak and bj day is the same day as pi day. Why did they have to pick a math holiday for it!!! why not any other month. I vote it be moved to jan 14.

1.

Steak and Blowjob Day

Celebrated on March 14th, Steak and Blowjob Day is a holiday for men, celebrated the month after Valentine's Day -- a holiday for women.

The idea is simple: no cards, flowers, candy or other whimsical gifts. Ladies (and gay men), you simply bestow your partner with a steak and a blowjob. Not necessarily in that order.

Dave: "Hey Bob, what did Sally get you for Steak and Blowjob Day?"

Bob: "Well Dave, that would be a big juicy steak, and a big juicy blowjob."

by The Canadian Information Minister Feb 29, 2004 email it

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Steak+and+Blowjob+Day

Life

My senior year is coming to an end. I am sick of school but I am terrified of life. More to the point I am sick of my parents (everything I do is wrong) but I don't want to leave them. As many of you know my dad is very depressed. When I leave he gets perticularly upset. Hes so old now I also don't want to miss the rest of the time we have together. At the same time I don't think that I will meet my future husband in Binghamton. I really want my children to know their grandfather so there is a degree ergency their as well. My brother and his soon wife will be moving to NYC after he finishes his Phd. I don't want to be away from him either. I am so close to saying fuck it and moving to Israel. The job hunt is also stressing me out. I think Teach for America would be very beneficial for a career but I don't see their being time for dating and adapting to the new area (most likely New Orleans). I took the NYPD exam today but I can't see how I would have a family and follow that path. Also I have been told that the pay is so low I would have to work odd jobs.

I am still not over my emotion burst from Thursday night. I was hanging out with my overly diverse group of friends (russian, polish, indian, and purto rican) and they were all talking about love. I wanted to shoot myself in the foot. It upsets me to no end that I have yet to fall in love. Hell I have only ever been in one real relationship and that was close to four years ago (see old entries about Mike). Am I incapible of love? I always get the feeling I am going to die a miserable spinster. Is it wrong that I just want to get married and have children? I hate putzing about with the whole dating thing. I think I need the security of marriage to have a positive physical relationship. I have hope some day I will be able to let myself go and have an orgasim. Anyway thing about all of these things I just started bawling. I mean crying buckets. I felt like a total ass. I want the stability of commitment in this unsure time of my life.

This past Shabbat

Friday was the first requirement for maimonides outside of the monday classes. We were all asked to bring guests and I brought 2. I brought my brother Mike and our friend Ed. I guess I didn't read the emails about the event well because I thought it was going to be at the rabbi's house, but it was at Beth David. This falure on my part put my brother in an uncomfertable position. He is not a fan of being in shul. I felt bad about it. Because of this it was hard for me to injoy myself as much as I wanted to. I was also generally in a bad mood that day. Although, as always once the hebrew breaks out you can always see my brother mouthing along. He has always been better then me at Hebrew. I can't believe how much he still remembers. I was surprized the yasheva students didn't mingle more. I only talked to one of them... well he came over to talk to my brother and Ed. The rabbi from the yasheva spoke to us like we knew more then we did and I think spoke to long at some points, although I could just remember it this way because I was in a bad mood.

Saturday was more fun. I brought Arthur a good friend of mine and a Russian Jew. He doesn't really do the Jew thing. His girl friend is a really good looking Japanese student. I was surprized how comfertable he was. He even said he had a good time afterwards. He said he went to some Jewish camp when he was little so he was used to it. You learn something everyday. I really liked the talk about freedom and the concept of not being free without being tied to something you pick. That was prob the most meaningful thing discussed. The music was tons of fun. It bugs me the non-mixed dancing. They guys were having so much fun. I generally don't get along with girls so well. Oh and don't get me started on the CUTE baby!! There was a little girl that was adorable too. I was hoping to see the magiction though! To bad he didn't make it :(

I had my first maimonides meeting on Monday. Some elements were depressing to me. To start, the idea that almost no one really wants to hear what you want to say. I know I am the "friend" that often does more talking. I now realize I try to impress people to much. I also need to stop complaining to everyone I run into about how stressed out I am. I think this is another way of trying to impress people, saying how much work you have. Possiblely even trying to make them feel like they don't work as hard as you. Its almost as if I am kind of fishing for compliments like "relax you work to hard". I often feel like I don't have any good friends although the moment I am thinking about how luckly I am to have such fantastic friends.

During the meeting I was bothered by the comments made regarding remembering names. I don't believe everyone is cut out to remember names. I really do recognize people. For instance the other night I ran into a guy at late night and said hey I think you were in my calc 2 class 3 years ago. He couldn't believe I remember him. Or today when I was in staples and I recognized the sales person as a friend of a friends who I had played minigolf with once. He almost fell over backwards because that was back in high school. At the meeting I felt that people who tell me to memorize tons of stuff are the people who never had a problem with it. I thought they said it to make themselves feel like the rest of us just aren't trying hard enough. But much to my surprize I have been working harder to remember names and am doing much better at it.

The text study was very interesting. I don't know about helping formally rich people live well. That idea bothers me. People need to learn to adapt to their situation. I don't think more money should be spent on one person over another on meterial goods.

I think this class is just waht I was looking for this semester!

NEW YORK NEW YORK

NYC! yup I made 2 trips to NYC. One was inbetween my 2 European adventures and the other was upon my return home. The first trip I stayed in Larchmont for a night with Carrie, Linda and Arthur. Linda decide to take my mom and I to the Pepsi companies outdoor sculpure park. I walked ahead of them. At the end I sate down and waited for them. I must have fell asleep. I wake up thinking 10 mins had gone by and wonder a little as to where they were. But I sat patiently waiting for them. About 5 min passed and I decided to call them. I find I don't have service on the bench and get up and move. I notice that I have several messages and that my clock read that it was several hours later. I check the messages and low and behold there from my mom and Linda asking where I was each message more and more frantic. I realize then that I had fallen asleep for almost 3 hours. OOPS! Damn jet lag! They were sure happy to find me as I wandered sleeply toward the security guards.

Then I stayed with my aunt and her family in Queens. Wow what a crazy house. Becky and Sarah were rushing around. So I didn't see as much of them as I would have liked. I got Ices a couple times. Mike B came down to visit me as did Mike H. We had a baggle brunch the next day with all of us together.

The second trip was more fun, I stayed at my bf Mikes parents house in Queens. So I get back from GYLS and T and her sister drop me off at his house and all I want to do is sleep. And so I do. Next thing I know I wake up to tons of people running around in the house. Turns Mikes relatives from Cali were there. Oh man, wish someone would have warned me! I am somewhat freaked and run upstairs and wash my face intime to make it for dinner. Yum grilled cheese for me! The next night Mike took me out on the town one night and we saw Dial M for Murder... catch is... the cast was blind and so was a large portion of the audiance. Great play! After the play we went to a veggie resterant which was also good. It was a great night out! One of my fav NYC memories. On Sunday Mikes family had decided to have a delayed fathers day. Lucky me, 2 family events in ONE WEEKEND! But it wasn't so bad and Mike H. and his gf stopped by as well so that helped make it a fun time. We had one hell of a water fight. I am still cracking up about Mike B turning to me and asking if I think that my brother might fit into his new Gap pants while his clothes dry. And I was like Mike your pants are an X-SMALL!!! They wouldn't even fit me let alone my brother! Good times good times :)

Florida

Florida... wow... family... ugh... It was good to see my aunt, uncle and grandmother. Wow to many of us women in the appartment. My uncle spent most of his stay fixing my grandmas place. He fixed the air conditioning, shower, bath, car and fan that almost fell down on our heads. My grandma spent the nights at her friends because there were to many people over. My mom and I went 2 the movies twice and the the gym several times. We went on 2 fun walks although it was hot and sticky out. We went to the beach and to the wetlands. Mostly we watched tv, sat around, ate take out Chinese food and yelled. Next time I go to Florida I am draging some one closer to my age and hitting the clubs.

Vienna, Budapest, and Prague

My second trip was the Global Young Leaders Summit. Good trip as well. Not as meaningful but nice. There were college aged students representing about 20 countries. I learned alot from the speakers and talking to the staff. It was a fun time although many of the students were not mature enough to be there. I did meet some amazing friends T being the number 1. Anyways none of my buddies have sent me internet photos from the trip so no links to photos as of yet. Justian V. from Vestal High was there for those of you who know him. So it was cool reconnecting with him. Good times.

Oh man I guess I should put in the story about my airplane ride over. Weirdest ride ever... tops the bus ride I had with the guy next to me explaing to me that he is a man and I am a woman... anyways so I am sitting next to this Indian guy who isn't with the trip. I would guess he is middle aged. He kept talking to me even though I made it evident that I wanted to read my book (a week like anyother, its about Soviet women) and listen to music plus I couldn't understand him very well because of his accent. So later into the flight I want to sleep. The girl in front of me puts her seat back (her right) but the girl behind me pushes at my seat so I can't lay back. I am at this point so cramped. I guess I should put in that the girl behind me was prob at most 5'5" and really thin. Anyways so I am so sleepy cuz I am still on Belarus time that I finally start punching at the back of my seat in an attempt to get her back. I call over the flight attendent and ask her if there are any other seats on the plane. She tells me that the plane is full and I ask her if she can do anything about the girl behind me. She claimed she couldn't. After more time passes I start to cry cuz I am soooo freaking tired and in pain from being cramped. So the Indian guy next to me sugests that I lean toward him and put my pillow against the raised arm of the chair. I do this and eventually fall asleep.... This is where it gets weird... I wake up... and he is awake... AND HOLDING MY HAND! TIGHT!!!! I had to squrm to get him to let loose. I still had 2 more hours only the plan and spent them twisted away from him stairing out the window waiting for my breakfast.... which they never gave me. When I got off the plane he followed me tightly but I got away from him and RUSHED toward Justian V. WEIRDNESS!

Belarus and Poland

I went with Binghamton Universitys Hillel on a fantastic 10 trip. We toured many grave yards and synagogues in both countries. I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to go on the trip with, even though when I first met everyone in our meetings before the trip I thought we would kill each other. I wonder if we will all stay in touch past this summer. So far I have really only stayed in contact with Dan. I can't wait to see the group again on Aug 1st for our Kosher BBQ party!

Here are some webpages on the info...

Photos... don't mind the drunk ones of me... damn homemade wiskey!
http://community.webshots.com/user/hillelbelarus
http://community.webshots.com/user/hillelbelarus2

Press about the trip...
http://www.hillel.org/Hillel/NewHille.nsf/0/95DEE1B4FA27710F85256EC5004B5A59
http://eejhp.netfirms.com/SvirCemetery.htm

Please donate to Hillel at Binghamton if you can. We are 5 thousand dollars under our fund rasing goals. Also if you go to Binghamton look and see if the program is running again next year when school starts.

Anyways I have been seeing this guy Mike from math things have been fun. I met him in number systems and remembered seeing him in the vibes back in high school and thinking he is cute. He is moving to Cyprus end of Aug. Another place to visit :) Speaking of traveling I think I am going to make a travels book for all the countries I have been to as well as each region of the US I have been to. FUN FUN!

This summer I am going to Poland and Belarus from May 30th to June 10th. I will be working with a team to clean up a grave yard and build a fence around it. From June 10th to June 13th I will be in NYC! WAHOO! And then back to Eastern Europe from June 13th to the 25th with Global Youth Leadership Conference. I will be in Austria, Hungry and C. Republic. When I get back I am planing on taking Human Development 200 from July until Aug. and working at Circus Minimus. I am waiting to hear about a tutoring job as well.

Next Fall I plan to take Modern algebra (401), Russian Lingo (203), Russian Lit (240) and Biking (250). I hope it will be an easier semester.
